We know that after a month of indulgence January is a month to reconsider your choices around alcohol and to help decide what’s what in terms of your health, I went looking to see what benefits, if any there were to the rumours around red wine and here is what I found.

Red wine has a slew of health benefits when taken in moderation. The best red wine for health purposes are the darker red wines that actually come from the South West region of France. This also includes Bordeaux, Languedoc, the Rhone Valley and Roussillon. They have higher levels of Procyanidins, an antioxidant found in the dark skins which are linked to health benefits for your heart and longevity. Let’s have a look at a few other benefits of red wine…

Blood Sugar Regulation

The red skins of red wine contain Resveratrol. This helps control blood sugar levels, mostly in diabetic and pre-diabetic persons. Resveratrol aids the flow of blood and helps to lower cholesterol levels. Type 2 Diabetes is on the rise and a heathy lifestyle should be maintained to avoid this disease and its complications.

Heart Health

Red wine is also high in antioxidants which play a significant role in keeping your veins clear. Overall, red wines are known to lower the bad cholesterol in your system. This is good news for red wine drinkers but you must also note that this is in moderation and too much red wine will actually work against the heart.

Memory

Resveratrol once again helps with memory loss! Beta-amyloid protein has been shown to play a part in plaque forming in the brains of those with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. Resveratrol helps prevent this plaque forming. Of course this is still being researched but it looks promising.

Antioxidants

These little guys are amazing – the help protect against harmful free radicals! They help fight off the common cold, maintain healthy skin and hair but more seriously play a role in warding off certain cancers.

Weight loss

Our friend Resveratrol creates a chemical piceatannol which helps reduce fat cells in the body. Used in moderation, it adheres itself to insulin receptors in newly formed fat cells and prevents them from further growth. There is no better win-win!

Digestive System

Red Wine has a positive effect on the digestive system. Due to its antibacterial nature it has shown to help the general irritation of the stomach lining from various bacteria like Heliobacter.

Overall drinking red wine in moderation is hugely beneficial for you. However, it must be noted too much red wine can contribute to Liver Cirrhosis and weight gain.
