Domaine de Gournier, nestled in the scenic landscape of Languedoc in the South of France, basks in the radiant Mediterranean sun while benefiting from the refreshing influence of the nearby Cevennes mountains. Under the stewardship of Maurice Barouin and David Helou, the estate tends to 445 acres of vineyards spread across 14 picturesque villages, with 124 acres already cultivated organically.
Steeped in history, Domaine de Gournier’s journey began in 1959 when Maurice’s father acquired the estate, which boasted more fruit trees than vines at the time. In the early 1980s, Maurice assumed control, steering the focus towards viticulture. By 1983, he bid farewell to the cooperative and established his own cellar.
This wine, a testament to Domaine de Gournier’s commitment to quality, showcases a subtly mellower Viognier, exuding captivating expressions of tropical fruits such as mango, lychee, and pineapple, intertwined with delicate floral notes. It’s a delightful departure from the expected, proving that while it may not be a Gewurztraminer, this Viognier stands on its own with grace and distinction.
